Pogisho Pasha, Mpumalanga MEC for health and social services, yesterday wrapped up his successful three-day tuberculosis (TB) campaign in the Nkangala district on a high note.
Pasha, his senior officials and mayors from various towns embarked on a campaign to rekindle their commitment to fight and eradicate TB in the province.
They campaigned door- to-door, visiting churches, hospitals, clinics and shopping complexes .
The campaign started on Sunday at the Dr JS Moroka Municipal District and ended at Witbank TB Hospital.
At the hospital Pasha encouraged patients to continue taking their TB medication.
"All you need to do is to comply and in that way the disease will be conquered," Pasha said.
TB patient Samuel Sibande, 40, from Phola Park at Ogies, said: "I feel I have improved very much. When I came here two months ago I could not walk and now I can leave my bed and move about ."
In the MEC's speech at Sy Mthimunye Stadium, Pasha said the involvement of individuals, families and communities was important in the fight against the disease.
He said people should go for routine check-ups at local clinics and hospitals.
He broke down the province's current TB status as follows: - those with pulmonary TB were 7124; with extra pulmonary TB 842; children with TB were 414; and multi-drug resistant TB in the province was 87.
No cases of extreme drug- resistant TB had been reported in Mpumalanga, Pasha said.
