Having established links with the Mduku community of northern KwaZulu-Natal in 2003, the Hollard team returned last month to boost its education and health.
With the help of the Africa Foundation, Hollard built an educational development centre, equipped with computers and the Internet, three years ago. This venture was a major boost for the community, which has no running water and only very limited resources.
Hollard recently returned to build two classrooms at the Mduku High School.
The company also refurbished the Mduku clinic, which serves more than 32 000 people.
Thandi Sokujika, project manager of the Hollard Community Development Trust, said: "Tuberculosis infections are rife because nutrition is inadequate and living conditions are poor. Diagnosing the disease is a challenge because blood samples have to be sent to Msileni Hospital, which is 80km away."
The clinic was painted, its broken windows were repaired and the plumbing and electricity given an overhaul by the Hollard team.
The company also planted a vegetable garden at the Mnqobokazi Primary school. The vegetables from the garden will feed the community and the surplus will be sold to generate funds for the school.
