About 38 mud houses and a school have been damaged by floods in Mpumalanga.

The provincial Department of Local Government and Housing reported yesterday that mud houses and shacks in the Thembisile municipality in Siyabuswa were damaged by the heavy rains.

A school in the area also had part of its roof damaged.

Spokesman Simphiwe Kunene said a road was also damaged.

MEC Jabu Mahlangu, pictured, visited the stricken area yesterday and provided tents to the affected families.

"We shall await the complete assessment of the damage before deciding what further assistance, if any, will be needed," said Kunene.

Kunene warned residents living in low-lying areas and next to floodlines to be on the alert as the rains continue to pour in the province.

In the event of more flooding in the province, communities have been advised to call the department's disaster toll-free number on 0800-202-507.
