Choral music lovers are in for a treat when some of the finest choirs in southern Africa take to the stage in the finals of the national choir festival.

The finals take place at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University Vodacom Sports centre in Port Elizabeth on December 9 and 10.

A total of 26 choirs will vie for the championship trophy in two categories - the large category, where there are 16 choirs competing for the title, and the standard category with 10 choirs taking part.

Winners in the large category will pocket R30000 in prize money.

The second and third placed choirs will pocket R25000 for second place and R20000 respectively.

In the standard category the prize money is R27000, R22000 and R17000 respectively.

There will also be special awards of trophies in each category for the best rendition of the African and Western songs.

Competing choirs, drawn from church groups, universities and independents, will be from South Africa and Swaziland.
