An array of top South African runners is expected to take part in the celebrated Vodacom Heroes' Marathon in Mthatha on December 16.
"This is a yearly marathon, which started seven years ago. It continues to grow in leaps and bounds," said Athletics Transkei boss Luthando Charlie.
"The overall support for the marathon makes us happy as organisers, not only in Eastern Cape but throughout the country.
"There are many big names such as Brian Zondi, Titus Mamabolo, Mluleki Nobanda, Dimakatso Morobi and others who always make the trip to Mthatha.
"We are marketing the marathon, the plan is to make it one of the biggest on the continent where runners from Kenya, Ethiopia and other African countries will compete.
"The good thing about this marathon is that it helps to boost the economy of Eastern Cape, many people come here on holiday during the weekend of the event."
The regional body started the marathon to honour and recognise the contribution made by liberation heroes from Transkei.
The marathon will start at 6am in front of former president Nelson Mandela's home in Qunu and finish at the Walter Sisulu University of Technology. There will also be a Meeg Bank 10km road race and a 5km fun run in a bid by Athletics Transkei to accommodate beginners.
l The launch of the Hezekiel Sepeng Sports Foundation, which was to take place last Friday, will now take place in May.
This comes after Athletics South Africa president Leonard Chuene distanced his federation from the foundation, arguing that Sepeng was still banned for a doping offence.
