The process to repatriate the remains of political activist Moses Mabhida from Mozambique to South Africa has begun.

Mabhida's remains were exhumed yesterday at the Lhanguene Cemetery in Maputo.

Today a memorial service, to be attended by President Thabo Mbeki, ANC deputy president Jacob Zuma, KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sbu Ndebele and other politicians, will be held in Maputo.

Mabhida, who died in Mozambique in March 1986 from a heart attack, will be buried at his birth place in Pietermaritzburg, next Saturday.

He was one of the stalwarts of the ANC and of the Communist Party of South Africa.
