Gun of the assassin?

STOCKHOLM - A revolver of the type used in the unsolved 1986 assassination of Swedish prime minister Olof Palme has been handed over to Swedish police.

STOCKHOLM - A revolver of the type used in the unsolved 1986 assassination of Swedish prime minister Olof Palme has been handed over to Swedish police.

Acting on an anonymous tip, expert divers employed by the Swedish tabloid Expressen recovered the weapon from a lake near Mockfjaerd in central Sweden on Monday.

Expressen handed over the gun, still in its leather holster, to investigators who continue to search for Palme's killer.

Ballistics tests on a bullet fired from the recovered revolver, a Smith and Wesson, which was used in a post office robbery in 1983, reportedly match those found at the scene of Palme's murder. - Sapa-AFP
