Tycoon Mthembu in the dock for papgeld
Controversial Soweto businessman Mandla Mthembu yesterday appeared in the Johannesburg family court for failing to pay maintenance.
Mthembu, dressed in a black suit, made a brief appearance in the criminal section of the court after being arrested for allegedly defying an earlier court order.
An order issued two months ago demanded that Mthembu pay R8000 maintenance to his former wife every month.
His ex-wife, Dolly Matshabe, alleges that he has not paid for the past two months.
The money was supposed to be deducted from his account but the debit orders have reportedly bounced because of "insufficient funds".
In an interview with Sunday World at the weekend, Mthembu refuted the claim that there were insufficient funds in his account.
Actress Khanyi Mbau yesterday kept her promise to stand by her husband through what she calls Matshabe's "vindictive smear campaign".
The heavily pregnant Mbau arrived late in court yesterday morning, and searched frantically for court 15 where Mthembu was already appearing.
Dressed in a black catsuit, Mbau was inside the courtroom for about 30 minutes.
The couple left the court hastily after Mthembu's case was postponed to February 4.
Mthembu, who has not been asked to plead, is out on warning.
He was arrested at the Grace Hotel in Rosebank on Saturday.
Mbau and Mthembu's western wedding has been put on hold until the birth of their son.
With the maintenance axe hanging over Mthembu's head, will the couple have their fairy tale ending?
Only time will tell.
