The euphoria of having finished writing the month-long matric examinations has been replaced by a nerve-wracking wait for the results for thousands of grade 12 pupils in the Eastern Cape.
Pupils at Kusile Comprehensive School in Duncan Village, East London, have discovered that their joy of finishing writing the exams was short-lived. Now they have to wait anxiously for the results, which are due late next month.
The last cluster wrote the agricultural science second paper yesterday. Other pupils finished their exams last week.
"I'm glad that the exams are finally over. I'm only waiting for the results now," said an ecstatic Nobantsundu Mnwana.
Her classmate, Ngcali Bam, described the exams as "tricky" compared with the previous years.
But Bam said they were optimistic about the results, which will be announced by the Education Department.
About 92000 grade 12 pupils sat for the exams in 1064 centres throughout the province from the second week of last month.
Provincial chairman of the Congress of South African Students (Cosas), Xolani Witbooi, said they were satisfied with the support pupils had received from the Education Department and the South African Democratic Teachers' Union (Sadtu).
Witbooi said the department and Sadtu had met Cosas and other education stakeholders before the final exams.
"We have learnt to tackle the challenges we face together," he said.
The department had done everything possible to help pupils. He was optimistic matric results would improve this year.
