Durban motorists owe the eThekwini municipality more than R2million in unpaid traffic fines.
Now metro police are asking the public to help them track down these traffic-fine dodgers.
They have released the makes and registration numbers of the top 30 most wanted traffic offenders to the media and appeal to the public to call a hotline when they spot the cars.
Topping the list is a Ford Mondeo, registration NPN 79442, the owner of which faces 258 charges for fines of R101 150. Second on the list is a Toyota Hiace with the registration NUR 6289. The minibus is wanted in connection with fines totalling R94 880 for 236 traffic offences.
Alex Wright, a spokesman for the local metro police said it was difficult to track down the offenders because they used false addresses.
"We have been trying to get hold of them, but the telephone numbers and addresses they provided are incorrect. We hope that the public will be able to help us to get the traffic fine dodgers.
"It is unfair that some motorists pay their fines, while others don't pay," said Wright.
He said if owners believe there is a discrepancy they must provide the court with the necessary evidence.
Police urged members of the public to contact them on 031-306-4422 when they spot the wanted vehicles.
