This year has seen the biggest increase in black blood donors in the history of blood donation in South Africa, but more donors are still needed.

The South African National Blood Service said the number has grown from 18203 in October last year to 24156 so far this year . This 32percent increase still lags well behind the 325844 number of white donors who make up more than 93percent of t donors.

The Blood Services' Loyiso Mpuntsha said black citizens should realise that they were urgently needed to donate blood.

"Genetically speaking, it is preferable to get blood from black donors for black patients because people of the same race have a closer DNA match."
