The ANC has come out in support of beleaguered National Police Commissioner Jackie Selebi.

In a statement after its national executive meeting at the weekend, the ANC said the issues concerning Selebi were receiving the attention of the ministry of safety and security.

The party reiterated the government's position that no action would be taken against Selebi unless new evidence of his alleged involvement in criminal activities was produced.

"The NEC noted the statement issued by the cabinet and the minister of safety and security. It was further advised by its deployees in government that this matter is receiving attention, and that if any wrongdoing is found to have been committed by any person, then appropriate action will be taken," the ANC said.

Selebi has come under the spotlight after allegations linking him to key underworld figures, including Glenn Agliotti, who was arrested on Thursday in connection with the murder of mining magnate Brett Kebble.

Selebi has confirmed his friendship with Agliotti and after Agliotti's arrest there have been demands that Selebi step down or be suspended.

Selebi has responded by saying he was going nowhere until his bosses ordered him to do so.
