But love or hate the vuvuzela, the trumpet-like instrument has become an integral part of South African soccer. There's never a dull moment on the terraces when the vuvuzela-blowing fans are in full cry.

Cynics still dismiss it as contributing to noise pollution. Notably it has sparked fist-fights at rugby games, where it is banned.

But it is the height of irony that some soccer fans now want the the vuvuzela to be banned from the game.

This when there were major plans to make it a popular item in 2010 when the country hosts the World Cup Soccer finals.

Leading the anti-vuvuzela brigade is, surprisingly, Kaizer Chiefs supporter Freddie "Saddam" Maake, who says he pioneered the vuvuzela at football matches.

What has brought about the vuvuzela discord is not immediately clear.
