The debate takes place in Kimberley in Northern Cape for seven days, starting on December 3.
Organised by the South African Schools Debating Board, the National Schools Debating Championships seek to empower youth with academic, psychological, spiritual and other life skills.
Contestants are from all the provinces, as well as from Lesotho, Botswana, Swaziland and Namibia.
Organiser Ambrose Thati said the debating board wished to empower youth through the programme, "to develop youths' critical thinking, communications, conflict- resolution and development of leadership skills, as well as foster an awareness of controversial social and political issues".
lSowetan and the Aggrey Klaaste Nation Building Foundation is helping the board with publicity.
Most of the participants come from poor families and they are struggling to raise the participation fees.
