The National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union (Nehawu) in Mpumalanga has described the investigation of the provincial head of health and social services, Excellent Moloko, by premier Thabang Makwetla as "unnecessary".

Last month Nehawu members in Mpumalanga demanded the immediate dismissal of Moloko, accusing him of causing the collapse of emergency services in the province.

But this week Nehawu's secretary, December Manana, said: "We don't think there is anything to investigate.

"The man's record speaks for itself."

Moloko was reportedly fired for incompetence.

Ntimeme Skosana, Makwetla's spokesman, confirmed that the premier was investigating Moloko.
