A friend of the poor who was involved in projects aimed at uplifting his community, who single- handedly funded youth projects ranging from education and music to business and drama.
This was Mokalise Walter Meela, the prominent Limpopo businessman who died last Friday after a short illness.
The death of the 62-year-old Meela has shocked not only the people of Sefene village, in Botlokwa, his birthplace, but the whole of Limpopo.
Meela started his businesses in Seshego, where he owned Molemole Roadhouse, next to Seshego Stadium.
He became a successful businessman in Botlokwa, Polokwane and Seshego. He also owned a security company.
This writer got to know him through soccer in 1983 while still at Samuel Thema Primary School when Meela sponsored a schools' tournament.
Meela urged us to focus on our studies, and at the same time participate in sport so that Limpopo can have more professional soccer players.
One thing that endeared Meela to many people is that he was always willing to share information with anyone who sought his help.
"He was not selfish when it came to sharing information on how to succeed in business," said businessman Alex Morokolo.
Pat "Fingers" Moyaha, Limpopo Eagles Softball Club publicist, said Meela's death was a blow to black business in the province.
Guillo "S'dumo" Marapyane, Softball South Africa president, said: "The man was always willing to help the needy."
Tom Boya, Limpopo president of the South African Leisure and Tourism Association, also paid tribute to Meela's selflessness.
Meela will be cremated today.
