A bank robber, 39, wanted for murder and who was able to evade the law for more than 13 years, was rearrested yesterday.

He was arrested in Dobsonville, Soweto, by members of the Lichtenburg task team on wanted suspects, which was established last month.

They were working on outstanding suspects in the murder of Sergeant Riaan Snyman.

Snyman, 23, was killed by seven bank robbers at Sannieshof near Lichtenburg in North West when he and his colleague responded to a call that a robbery was in progress on September 13 1993.

According to Superintendent Louis Jacobs, Snyman was shot through the chest shortly after entering the bank, and died on the scene.

His colleague was held at gun point while the robbers ransacked the bank.

After emptying the tills, they helped themselves to the personal belongings of the cashiers and took both policemen's official firearms.

All the robbers were arrested the same day and all the stolen items were recovered.

Shortly after the arrests, one of the suspects died.

In 1994 the remaining six robbers escaped from police custody in Gauteng.

The first was rearrested in 1996 and sentenced to 93-years imprisonment. In 1997 the second one was killed during a police shoot-out. And in 2000, the third one was sentenced to 106 years in jail.

It was confirmed that one of the three outstanding suspects died of natural causes, leaving two still on the run until yesterday at about 3.30am. Information with the regard to the last suspect is being followed up, Jacobs said.
