Mercedes-Benz is without a doubt one of the greatest leaders in the automotive industry.

Most people take note when the manufacturer says it has something in the pipeline. At the same time, competitors panic and spend sleepless nights trying to figure out what's in store.

The latest from Mercedes-Benz is no longer a dream. Its massive SUV is very much alive and is in South Africa.

The appearance of the GL leaves observers in no doubt about the quality of the luxurious SUV. This premium off-roader displays size, robustness and muscular power, but it is also sporty and dynamic.

The GL's long wheelbase and high roof line extend as far as its rear wall and this creates a dynamic silhouette. The large window areas further emphasise these lines.

Its generously-sized rub strips and the solid roof rails also create a sporty appearance. The powerfully accentuated fenders with broad chamfered edges and the large light-alloy wheels lend the vehicle a firm-looking appearance.

The distinctive design idiom exudes power and exclusivity. Calm body surfaces, powerful, wedge-shaped features and striking details give the impression of forward motion even while the vehicle is stationary.

With its poised, assured presence, the GL's aspirations to conquer the SUV market segment are clearly visible, according to the manufacturer.

Safety features come in the form of anti-lock brake system (ABS), brake assist (BAS) and electronic stability programme (ESP).

Like all other Mercedes-Benz vehicles, the GL has great handling and holding.

But all this does not come cheap. The base model GL-Class is priced at R675000 and the top of the range costs a whopping R770 000.
