Anyone who has any sense of pride or ethics would resign at the mere mention of one's name in corruption or conflict of interest.
It is unfortunate that in South Africa morality and ethics are placed on the back burner. People emphasise innocent until proven guilty, but public service demands that one should step down and allow justice to take its course.
The last straw was the drunk driving allegation. And he had the temerity to ask the police officers if they knew who he was.
But South Africa being what it is, Mti has already been earmarked for a high profile job for the 2010 World Cup. Government employees must learn to serve the public honestly because they are paid well.
This brings back the question of a need for a cooling-off period where disgraced senior officials in one sector leave only to be put in charge of another similar sector. This matter has to be looked into very closely.
