An array of South Africa's top runners are expected to take part in the 10km Pick 'n Pay road race in Alexandra on Sunday.

Rueben Kgatle, chairman of Alexandra Athletics Club, said they will be pleased to have about 1 000 people taking part.

"We have done our homework in terms of marketing and promoting the race in Johannesburg and all the surrounding areas.

"The race has already generated a lot of interest in Alexandra where the majority of community members have pledged their support.

"People always read about terrible things happening there, we are using the race to educate the community about the dangers of crime.

"Our main target with this race are the school children, but our mothers, uncles and grandfathers are also welcome because we want to make it an all inclusive event."

Some of the big names expected include Lucky Mohale, Tshamano Setone, Takalane Nthulane and Dimakatso Morobi.

Kgatle and his officials were at the 10km Diepsloot road race yesterday where he was handing out pamphlets about their race.

"We are delighted that Central Gauteng Athletics gave us the right to host the race. We used to stage a 10km race in the past but did not have it last year because of financial constraints.

"We need something similar to the Soweto Marathon where the residents of Alexandra adopt the race, everybody is willing assist to contribute to its success.

"Our race has the potential to be one of the best 10km events in the country. We need the support of the business sector to attract more top runners."

The race will start at 8am at Altrek Stadium and finish at the same venue. There will also be 5km and 2,5km races to accommodate the younger ones and beginners.
