A police inspector stationed at Wierdabrug was arrested for allegedly hijacking a German sedan in the Pretoria CBD at lunch time on Saturday.
The policeman was fleeing from a mob pursuing him for allegedly robbing a woman of a bag when he hijacked a black VW Golf 5 at the corner of Pretorius and Paul Kruger streets at about 1pm, according to the police.
Police spokesman Constable Brenda Kgafela confirmed the incident, saying members of the flying squad arrested the policeman after finding the vehicle parked outside his home in Block A, Mabopane. She said the policeman was expected to appear in court soon on charges of theft and hijacking. The vehicle belongs to a senior employee of the Gauteng North Department of Labour, Molatelo Mathikithela, 26.
Mathikithela said he had just approached Church Square and was yielding for traffic before getting into Pretorius Street when he saw a man fleeing from a mob.
"The fleeing man then pulled out a firearm and ordered me out of the car. He got in and sped away. I immediately called Nestar [vehicle tracking company] and they tracked the vehicle and were able to inform me that it was headed in the direction of Soshanguve.
"I was horrified to discover that the man who hijacked me in broad daylight was a policeman. I have since opened a case of hijacking against him, but I am glad that I have recovered my vehicle," Mathikithela said.
l In another incident on Saturday, a man died after a wall of sand collapsed on him and his two colleagues while digging a trench for the installation of water pipes in Sinoville, north of Pretoria.
Kgafela said the incident happened at about noon at a construction site at the corner of Engeldoorn Street and Zambesi Drive.
Enerst Maluleka, 33, of Soshanguve, died from suffocation. His two colleagues were rushed to Montana Hospital where their condition was described as stable.
