Cement has solid growth

Cement consumption should continue to show growth beyond 2010, said Albert Corcos, newly appointed chief executive of Lafarge South Africa.

"Growth is being sustained by government investment in housing and infrastructure, not to mention gearing up for the 2010 Soccer World Cup," he said.

"It is great news for the country's economy as it demonstrates increasing trust by a multitude of players in the economy."

Yearly cement demand has risen almost 50 percent since 2002 and the construction market as a whole is set for growth above 10 percent this year.

Corcos said that the R1,2billion project to increase cement capacity by one million tons a year was on track and scheduled for finalisation and commissioning in 2008.
