THE HAGUE - The international criminal court yesterday began to hear evidence against an alleged Congolese warlord accused of recruiting child soldiers to kill and mutilate his enemies.

Thomas Lubanga identified himself to the three-judge panel as the former president of the Union of Congolese Patriots.

The hearing is meant to determine whether the evidence against Lubanga is strong enough to merit a full trial, which could last for months. He would face life in prison if convicted.

Prosecutors said Lubanga's UPC recruited children and trained them to kill members of rival tribes. If they refused to fight, they were threatened with execution. - Sapa-AP
