The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) is talking to motor vehicle manufacturers about buying taxis at a discount.

Provincial Santaco chairman Phindile Goqoza said: "We've warned our members not to rush out and buy new taxis because we are negotiating deals that are better than the existing ones."

Santaco has told its members not to buy new taxis as individuals because that would cost them a fortune.

It would be to their advantage, the council said, to buy taxis "as a collective" because that would be cheaper.

Goqoza condemned the R50000 offered by the government as compensation for each scrapped taxi.

"Our members must have access to funding from the banks and identified car dealers," said Goqoza.

He said Toyota dealers should give the taxi industry a 20percent discount because Toyota taxis dominated the industry.

Goqoza suggested a meeting between Santaco and Transport Minister Jeff Radebe.
