The acting principal of a Limpopo primary school was arrested yesterday for embezzlement.

He waited for the police to arrest him in the school yard, in full view of pupils and teachers.

A police spokesman, Superintendent Moatshe Ngoepe, said R17000 was missing from the fees account of the school, which is near Modjadjiskloof.

He said: "He was given the money and told to deposit it in the bank.

"When he couldn' t produce a receipt the school governing body smelt a rat," said Ngoepe.

Numerous meetings were held about the matter but the acting principal reportedly always avoided the issue.

But, said Lebepe Thomas, head of the governing body, the acting principal finally admitted to stealing the money and the matter was handed over to the police.

l A school principal in Mpumalanga accused of using school funds to pay his travelling costs to and from work for the past 10 years will not be charged, the provincial education department said.
