Moloko Temo, presumably the oldest person in the country - and the world - will be a special guest of honour at this year's centenarian celebrations on Sunday.
Temo, 132, from Ga-Manthata, in Dendron, will arrive in style in Polokwane, Limpopo, event organiser Tom Boya said yesterday.
A taxi has been fitted with a wheelchair ramp, he said.
Born in 1874, Temo is believed to be the oldest living person in the world.
The Guinness Book of Records is in the process of confirming that she is indeed the oldest living person.
More than 300 centenarians in the province will converge at the Peter Mokaba stadium for the celebrations.
Boya said the event is aimed at celebrating the lives of the elders who survive beyond the age of 100.
Centenarian celebrations in Limpopo started in 1996 with 50 people more than 100 years old.
Today the province boasts 600 centenarians.
"Other provinces are following our example. Limpopo leads and other provinces follow," Boya said.
Boya said it was through the centenarian celebrations that Temo was identified as the oldest person.
Seaparo Sekoati, health and social development MEC, will be the guest speaker at Sunday's event.
The event will also be used to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Age-in-Action, a lobby group fighting for older people's rights.
The Older Person's Forum and other pensioners' associations will also participate in the event.
Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang visited Temo in September to congratulate her on her age.
