Tonight South Africa honours its inspirational achievers through the yearly Community Builder of the Year awards ceremony at Johannesburg's Sandton Convention Centre.
The provincial eliminations for the awards started in June and in August 36 provincial finalists were announced.
The list was whittled down to the 12 who will be vying for the top prize in each of the four categories - youth, adult, group and senior - and for the title of overall winner.
The Community Builder of the Year competition is one of 11 nation-building projects conceived by the late Sowetan editor-in-chief, Aggrey Klaaste, in 1991. It is sponsored and organised by Sowetan, the SABC, Old Mutual and the nine provincial departments of social development.
The competition is open to individuals leading community development projects that have been running successfully for about two years.
YOUTHFINALISTS
l Daniel Mashimbye, of Giyani, Limpopo's Ndlandlamuka Institute for Sustainable Development;
l Christelle Broodryk, of Destiny's Child Arts and Culture Group, Virginia, Free State;
l Sasha Dube, of Siyanda Theatre Laboratory, Upington, Northern Cape.
ADULT FINALISTS
l Sipho Ndlovu, of KwaZulu-Natal's How a Farm School Can Be Transformed educational development project;
l Zalisile Marwanqana, of Sweet African Inspiration Cultural Development Group, East London, Eastern Cape;
l Jacobeth Lepedi, of North West's Bosele papermaking project.
SENIOR FINALISTS
l Winnie Mabaso, of the Zenzele counselling project, Finetown informal settlement, Lenasia, Gauteng;
l Maria Visagie, of the Oasis skills development project, Upington, Northern Cape;
l Melita Violet Masemola, of Re A Kgona Mankwengcommunity programme, Mankweng, Limpopo.

l Sophie Boshielo, of the Thuthukani project, Walkraal, Mpumalanga;
l Jacobus Pansegrouw, of the Western Cape's Group of Hope community project, Worcester;
