Workers and employers will celebrate improved relationships when the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) marks its 10th anniversary tomorrow.
The CCMA was one of the first major organisations established by the new government after it took power in 1994, to promote social justice and equality in the workplace. The body was set up after the Labour Relations Act was passed in 1996, to provide labour dispute resolution and dispute management services to the public.
CCMA director Nerine Kahn said there had been "tremendous changes in dispute resolution" since the establishment of the commission, which had "touched the lives of almost every South African in one way or another".
The commission receives an average of 500 new referrals every working day and processes at least 10000 cases monthly.
Since it came into existence, it has handled more than one million cases.
Kahn said that the vision of the organisation was to promote social justice and economic growth for the labour market.
This was done through dispute resolution, dispute prevention and institution building, which involves supporting and advising the country's 54 industry bargaining councils. - BuaNews
