The new Government Employees Medical Scheme (Gems) has a membership of 45000 principal members, covering about 120000 people, Public Service and Administration Minister Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi said yesterday.

The scheme was also helping to relieve pressure on the public healthcare system, she said at parliament.

"The fact that 40percent of Gems' members did not previously access the employer subsidy and had no medical scheme cover means the scheme is making significant progress towards correcting imbalances and promoting access to the employer subsidy," she said.

Gems was launched in January as a scheme for public service employees to increase the number of people on medical schemes. - Sapa
