National Police Commissioner Jackie Selebi is hopeful that a breakthrough will be made in the very near future in the murder case of businessman Brett Kebble, police said yesterday.

"The commissioner is hopeful of a breakthrough in the near future. He has asked the investigating team to report back to him in two weeks," said director Sally de Beer.

This development follows a meeting between Selebi and the investigating team in which he was told that "important information" was being followed up.

The controversial businessman was shot and killed in Johannesburg in September last year.

Since then there has been little indication that progress was being made in the case.

Meanwhile, the weekly Mail & Guardian newspaper reported on the Scorpions investigation into the murder, called project "Bad Guys", outlining a criminal network surrounding Kebble. - Sapa
