Africa's largest stock market, the JSE, celebrated its 119th anniversary yesterday.

The exchange was born in a miner's tent in 1887, just one year after the cries of "gold" rang through the Witwatersrand.

"Though more than a century old, the JSE is still going strong. Today, the JSE's total market capitalisation is sitting at over R4,8trillion with about 390 companies listed," said JSE chief executive Russell Loubser, ranking it among the top 20 exchanges worldwide. - I-Net Bridge
