The Joburg Open, one of the newest, richest and largest golf tournaments on the Sunshine Tour, will improve the game among poor communities in the Johannesburg area.
The tournament, with prize money of R9 million, was launched in Jozi last week.
It will raise funds for the establishment of a development driving range near Diepsloot, north of Sandton.
The range will offer school children and other members of the community regular coaching sessions.
Those who show talent and persist with their training will receive free second-hand equipment and, eventually, club membership.
The Joburg Open is going to have a big fields, with 200 players taking part.
Amos Masondo, the executive mayor of Johannesburg, said they wanted everyone in the city to feel that the Joburg Open belongs to them.
"The tournament will showcase the city and its people to sports lovers throughout the world," Masondo said.
"We hope that what they see is a dynamic, multicultural community and a sophisticated destination that is ideal for events like this."
