The South African Prisoners Organisation for Human Rights (SAPOHR) has condemned the murder of an inmate by other inmates in a single cell at the Acornhoek police station in Mpumalanga.
Kgaugelo Malele, 23, was arrested in Bushbuckridge on Saturday and charged with housebreaking.
He was locked up with four awaiting-trial prisoners in a cell. On Sunday night police heard a scuffle in the cell and went to investigate.
"They found Malele dead," said Mopani police spokesman Superintendent Moatshe Ngoepe yesterday.
Preliminary investigations revealed that three of the four inmates had assaulted Malele. They have been charged with murder. The fourth awaiting-trial prisoner is expected to be a state witness.
SAPOHR president Golden Miles Bhudu said they were disturbed by such incidents.
"This is not an isolated incident where the lives of those who are incarcerated are endangered by fellow inmates and also by police officials themselves," Bhudu said yesterday.
"We send our condolences to the family of the murdered suspect."
