A Limpopo spaza owner saved his family from armed robbers by shooting one of them in the chest.
The 40-year-old man and his wife, from Makgofe village near Polokwane, were with their two daughters watching TV on Monday night when they heard a knock at the door.
The man, who would not give his name because some of the robbers are still on the run, said: "My wife went to the door to investigate. I heard her screaming and knew something was wrong.
"I rushed into our bedroom to fetch a gun. When I came out I came face to face with a man pointing a gun at my terrified wife," he said.
The spaza owner shot and wounded one of the suspects in the chest.
"He lunged at me and I thought he would grab the gun from me.
"I managed to shoot him a second time.
"I then went outside to check on the other men but could not find them.
"The injured suspect ran away to the car they were using, which was parked at the gate."
A Seshego police spokesman, Inspector Mohlaka Mashiane, said the police found two Z88 pistols with their serial numbers filed off outside the spaza owner's yard. The police believe the guns were left by the robbers.
"We managed to track down the car, a white Nissan Sentra. We found it at Seshego Hospital - where we also found a man who was being treated for gunshot wounds," Mashiane said.
The suspect arrested at the hospital was found to be in possession of an unlicensed pistol. His car had false registration numbers.
Police are searching for two other suspects.
