An East London school was almost swindled of R10 000 by an unknown conman who claimed the money had been deposited mistakenly in the school's account.

Morgan Nel, the principal of Abbotsford Christian School, said the man claimed to be an official from Pick 'n Pay head office in Jozi .

The caller told them the school had won R8000 in a competition.

Nel said: "We were even happier when we received a deposit slip for R18000, but an hour later we got another call saying the secretary had made a mistake and [had] deposited an additional R10 000."

The matter was reported to the police and the bank fraud unit. A few days later the bank discovered that the cheque was fraudulent . - Vuyolwethu Sangotsha
