Simphiwe Dana's award-winning debut album, Zandisile, has been signed by Warner International for worldwide release. The album will be released on December 11, except in the US, where it will only be released early next year.

However, the new deal excludes European countries such as Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands, Austria and Switzerland, where the album was signed by Skip Records before Warner showed interest. It has sold about 5000 units in those countries.

The album reached number one in the Billboard World Music Charts without record company support.

It sold more than 50000 units in South Africa, giving it platinum status.

Speaking before leaving for Germany, Dana said the signing could only mean good things for South African music.

She said: "If it succeeds, that will focus attention on South African music."
