The race is on for the Sports Star of the Year award, with Protea cricketer and 2005 award winner Makhaya Ntini, swimming sensation Roland Schoeman, 400 metres hurdles star LJ van Zyl, disabled sprint world record breaker Oscar Pistorius and Free State rugby flanker Kabamba Floors, in line to be honoured by public vote, at the South African Sports awards at the Theatre on the Track, Midrand on November 30.

The South African Sports awards is a partnership between Sport Recreation SA, the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) and SABC Sport. The SA Sports Awards will be broadcast on SABC 2 and SABC Radio.

Ntini set a variety of landmarks, most notably in taking 6 wickets at a cost of 22 runs in Cape Town to set a record for the best bowling by a SA bowler against Australia in One-Day International Cricket.

He also became the first SA bowler to take 10 Test wickets four times in Test match cricket. A BMI report confirmed his status as the most popular sports person in South Africa, which was well supported by him being named as the SA Cricketer of the Year and Test Cricketer of the Year.

Roland Schoeman's haul of three gold medals (in the 50m freestyle, 50m butterfly, and 4 x 100m freestyle relay) - setting three Commonwealth Championship records in the process - set him up for a nomination.

Floors is a deserved candidate following his consistent string of performances during this year's Currie Cup competition, which saw him earn the Man of the Match awards, in the semifinal and final matches. - Sapa
