An interesting element to emerge from the latest Gauteng crime report is the arrest of 52 Zimbabweans for armed robbery.

An interesting element to emerge from the latest Gauteng crime report is the arrest of 52 Zimbabweans for armed robbery.

Coming after recent reports of the increasing involvement of African immigrants in crime, this is a worrying dimension that will generate much speculation and throw up all sorts of theories.

That thousands of north and southern African immigrants have streamed to this country in search of a better life is a reality and a trend predicted as early as 1994.

Hardly surprising too is that most of the immigrants have come from neighbouring Zimbabwe, which has experienced an economic meltdown.

Given this scenario, the challenge facing the police and the government is to ensure that their response to this feature does not leave them open to accusations of xenophobia.
