The third edition of the Mayoral Soccer Challenge under-19 tournament gets under way at Katlehong Stadium on Saturday and Sunday.

Sixteen selected teams from eight greater towns in Ekurhuleni will vie for glory in boys and girls' categories.

They are Alberton, Kempton Park, Benoni, Springs, Boksburg, Nigel, Brakpan and hosts Germiston.

Gezani "Ace" Ngobeni, tournament organiser, said the aim of the challenge is to bring the teams together to keep them in shape for their league games in various districts.

"We we will use this opportunity to select a provisional 40-member [boys] squad that will take part in the Bayhill under-19 tournament billed for Cape Town during the Easter holidays next year,'' said Ngobeni.

The games will be played on a knockout format, with the semifinals taking place on on Saturday.

The final will be held on Sunday at the same venue.

The Ekurhuleni Metro Council will supply eight buses to ferry players from different areas to Katlehong on both days and will also provide refreshments.
