Police have sent out a clear message to criminals, saying they will "shoot back and fight fire with fire".
The warning comes in the wake of key arrests by KwaZulu-Natal police this week.
On Tuesday night police shot dead a suspected robber and wounded another during a foiled cash-in-transit heist near Durban International Airport.
Earlier they foiled a cash-in- transit robbery on the city's M4 freeway.
Detectives shot dead a suspect and wounded his accomplice when they tried to overpower a police officer who was taking their finger prints.
The two are linked to a syndicate specialising in heists, hijackings and robberies at jewellery stores. They were also linked to the killing of two bouncers.
They and two others were arrested shortly after landing from Johannesburg with R160000 in cash and R200000 worth of jewellery.
Police spokesman Phindile Hadebe said: "We have high performance vehicles at strategic places. We have unmarked vehicles. We are going to deploy more members out there. We are serious about combating crime."
Durban Chamber of Business chief executive Bonke Dumisa said the recent apprehensions of high profile suspects sends out a comforting message to the community and business at large that government is on top of the crime.
"The tougher police are on criminals the more comfortable the business community.
"We believe that community co-operation also aids this outcome," he said.
