Parents of pupils at a southern KwaZulu-Natal school have called for the sacking of two teachers after they were charged with stealing school equipment at the weekend.
The deputy principal, Robson Mbhele, 51, and Sifiso Ngwabe, 38, a sports organiser, are accused of breaking into Fingqindlela High School, St Faiths, and stealing items including a television set, two video machines, a generator and a decoder.
Soon after the arrests the school's principal, Jabulani Mthembu, was beaten up by unknown attackers.
A parent, Bhekokwakhe Cele, said parents wanted the teachers dismissed from the school immediately.
"We can no longer trust these people. The principal was also beaten by thugs because he was suspected of being involved in the arrests."
Christi Naude, spokesman for the provincial department of education, condemned the action of the teachers.
"They will face an internal disciplinary hearing. If found guilty they will be fired," Naude said.
lThe teachers have appeared in the Phungashe magistrates' court and were granted bail of R5000 each. They will reappear in court on November 6.
