Students and teachers at Lepato High School in GaMakhushane village, Limpopo, were horrified to learn that a teacher had been shot dead by her 42-year-old lover.

Anikie Matlala, 40, was allegedly killed by her live-in lover during the early hours of Sunday morning.

Matlala and her boyfriend, a soldier in the South African Infantry Battalion in Phalaborwa, had gone to Lulekani Stadium to watch a gospel concert. Witnesses said an argument started when a partygoer danced close to her .

Mopani police spokesman Superintendent Moatshe Ngoepe said after the festival the couple went to their house in Lulekani.

"The suspect sprayed a hail of bullets into the room, hitting the victim in the chest. She died instantly," Ngoepe said.

The suspect ran away, but handed himself over to police on Monday morning.

He appeared in the Lulekani magistrate's court yesterday and was refused bail. The case was remanded to November 9.
