The people of Silindini village, in Engcobo in Eastern Cape, will benefit from a state-of-the-art multipurpose community centre, which will be built in their area soon.
The project is a joint initiative of the Independent Development Trust (IDT), Lonmin Platinum and Engcobo municipality.
The construction of the community centre will fulfil one of the key objectives of the government: bringing its services closer to the people.
Multipurpose community centres are one-stop centres where local, provincial and national government, as well as other service providers, offer much-needed services and information about government programmes to local communities.
Lonmin Platinum gave R2,5million to the IDT for the construction of the centre, which is expected to begin in January.
The community will have access to government services such as pensions, health education and passport applications.
People will no longer have to travel long distances to access government services. For years they have had to to walk for two hours just to get to the bus stop.
Eastern Cape Premier Nosimo Balindlela expressed gratitude to Lonmin for its generosity.
