Lolly to assist cyclists

Eduard Maritz is one of South Africa's most promising junior cyclists.

Eduard Maritz is one of South Africa's most promising junior cyclists.

He is the current South African under-14 time trial champion, yet hails from a disadvantaged background that prevents him from travelling to most races around the country and gaining access to the necessary equipment. Maritz is not alone.

HB Kruger, another junior, recently competed in only his fourth road race and finished 16th. He did so using a borrowed bicycle.

In response to the needs of these and other junior cyclists, The Sports Trust and Nedbank Capital have donated R75 000 to give six promising youngsters the chance to realise their dreams of competing in a major cycling race.

The sponsorship will enable Maritz and Kruger, Douglas Makama, from Hammanskraal, Soshanguve's Lazarus Motsepe, and Pavier Olyn and Lucky Mophuru from Pretoria to compete in the Bakwena SA Post Office SuperClassic Cycle Race on 12 November. The money will be used to buy bicycles, gear, transport, nutritional supplements and accommodation. - Sowetan
