Workers and the community in a North West town are bracing themselves for possible confirmation of a grisly find.

Workers from a company contracted to renovate the magistrates' court building in Zeerust, about 60km west of Mafikeng, uncovered on Monday what are believed to be human bones together with a rusted knife.

Lerato Modise of the Zeerust police said the bones resemble those of a human's lower leg and foot.

"But this could be nothing because a few months ago bones that looked like hands were found at the same building when the place was renovated.

"After these bones had been investigated at a forensic laboratory, it was found that they belonged to an animal," Modise said.

Zeerust is in an area where many people believe in witchcraft and the police have asked the community to remain calm while waiting for the results of the investigation into the discovery of the bones.
