Shihan Peter "Poison'' Thage is hopeful that the South Africa team that is competing in the International Karate Organisation (Matsushima) will bring home silverware from the quadrennial World Cup this week.

He was speaking ahead of the championships scheduled for Sydney, Australia, on Saturday and Sunday.

"I have confidence in the national coach Eddie 'The Rock' Thage, whose experience will definitely guide the fighters to hoist the South African flag high,'' said Peter.

Eddie Thage was crowned heavyweight champion at the same tournament in the United States in 2002, but he won't be defending his title this time round.

Three women will get their first international exposure at the prestigious event.

They are lightweight Masedisa Mojaki, middleweight Fikile Thembeka and heavyweight fighter Tamara Booi.

The rest of the 14-member squad is Papi Mokoena, James Moleleki, Jacob Nxadi, Clive Nonjoco, Mcendisi Mbaxa, Senzo Gumede, Raymond Mothwa, Lucky Tshabalala, Pepsi Shilubane, Jutas Ngobeni and Khanyisane Mazibuko.
