It is rather unfortunate that National Prosecuting Authority spokesman Makhosini Nkosi has requested that his contract not be renewed when it expires next year.

His decision to step down stems from the pressure that arose from the difficult job Nkosi had to do as the mouthpiece of an organisation tasked with prosecuting individuals suspected of wrongdoing.

It was to be expected that Nkosi would attract venom in those cases when NPA boss, Vusi Pikoli, appeared to take a back seat.

As in the case of his predecessor, Bulelani Ngcuka, Pikoli must be seen to show leadership by often coming to the fore to pronounce on those thorny prosecutions that cause discomfort.
