Commuters' woes in the Eastern Cape might be a thing of the past.
Roads and Transport MEC Thobile Mhlahlo has pledged to buy about 200 new buses worth millions of rands.
The department has already bought seven buses, costing R15 million, for the cash- strapped Mayibuye Transport Corporation (MTC).
The seven buses will be used by MTC, which has been beset by financial problems for many years.
The purchase has increased the MTC fleet from 47 to 54 buses, which will carry 1,6million passengers a year.
Mhlahlo has allocated a further R30million to continue the corporation's recapitalisation programme during the current fiscal year.
After the Ciskei's reincorporation into South Africa the MTC has had difficulty in generating revenue to continue its operations .
A Nelson Mandela Metro-based company, Algoa Bus Company, has bought 40 new buses to add to its fleet of 262.
Another company, which is 100 percent black-owned, Africa's Best 350 - in the former Transkei - is buying more than 190 new buses at a cost of R19,7million.
Mhlahlo said the department was committed to transforming Mayibuye Transport Corporation and other public transport entities into economically viable institutions.
