A pedestrian was hit by a car transporting nine reportedly drunk youths.

The accident happened on Sunday at Bodibe Village near Itsoseng Township, Lichtenburg, North West.

It is alleged that the car, not driven by the owner, had nine occupants - six men and three women.

Police have opened a case of reckless and negligent driving.

According to Modise Galesitoe, a witness, the car was travelling at high speed when it hit the pedestrian, who was walking in the opposite direction.

Galesitoe said the driver lost control of the car after it hit the pedestrian and "the car rolled several times before it landed on its wheels again".

WhenSowetan arrived minutes after the accident, six of the injured occupants were scattered across the road. Those who had not been seriously injured had fled the scene.

The driver, the car owner and a man were admitted to hospital, and the other three were treated and discharged. The pedestrian was admitted to hospital with serious injuries.
