Choose jingle bells not sirens

Alarm bells should be ringing for all South African motorists after the recent spate of accidents.

Alarm bells should be ringing for all South African motorists after the recent spate of accidents.

At the weekend 22 people including children were killed in separate horror smashes that seem to have become the norm on our roads recently.

Last week two high-profile personalities - songbird Lebo Mathosa and businessman Humphrey Khoza - were killed in separate accidents, sending the nation into a collective sense of shock and utter despair. Sadly it seems the South African public has been desensitised to the horror of road deaths, given the frequency of accidents and apparent public apathy towards them.

Various reasons have been cited for the latest carnage: speed, drunken driving, fatigue and driving without fastened seatbelts.

We appeal to all motorists to exercise more caution on the roads as the spectre of a high road-death toll looms. We're not being alarmist, but these warning signs of a festive season awash with blood on the roads calls for heightened road safety campaigns and traffic law enforcement.

We have lost enough men, women and children on our roads. These accidents can be avoided if motorists respected road safety rules and were less aggressive.

Vehicles can be lethal weapons - more so when in the wrong hands.

They should be driven with extreme care.
